McDonald's founder Ray Kroc and his wife Joan were generous philanthropists. Mrs. Kroc was a particularly enthusiastic supporter of The Salvation Army and its good works. When Mrs. Kroc passed away in 2003, she left $1.5 billion – a gift that later grew to $1.8 billion – to The Salvation Army for the construction of a series of 26 state-of-the-art community centers across the country. Her goal was to create a center supported in part by the community, where children and families would be exposed to different people, activities and arts that would otherwise be beyond their reach. In 2013 a total of 27 centers will be finished nationwide, completing the 10 year construction project.
